Check out these snack options perfect for your next road trip. Simple but so delicious, it will make those hours on the road even more worth it!

If you’re like me, taking snacks on a road trip is a MUST. If I get hungry, I’ll always have something to snack on to avoid paying y too much on eating out. It’s important to consider snack options that are healthy, to give you some more of an energy boost, and keep you feeling refreshed and attentive. Check out some healthy road trip snack options that might be the perfect choice for you and your taste buds!

Healthy portable snacks with protein

Protein is a part of any healthy diet. Proteins are made up of amino acids, which help to build muscles and bones that in turn create hormones and enzymes. Protein is also an excellent source of energy, which will help keep you alert and attentive. Especially if you’re the one doing some of that driving!

Beef jerky

Beef jerky is a great snack option filled with lots of protein to take with you on a road trip. Especially if you’re a meat lover! Beef jerky is also very low in carbs, and high in many minerals that are beneficial to your health. Minerals present in beef jerky, such as zinc and iron, give you that extra immune and energy level support. Beef jerky is also convenient and very easy to take with you wherever you go.

Date bites

If you’ve never heard of a date before, they are delicious fruits with a very sweet taste. They are also a great source of protein. You can find dates at many grocery and shopping stores including Target.

There are a variety of health benefits that come along with dates. These include:

  • Dates contain minerals and vitamins including vitamin B6, potassium, and copper.
  • Dates will provide you with around 7 grams of fiber in a single 3.5 ounce serving.
  • If you struggle with a health condition such as diabetes, dates do an excellent job of preventing blood sugar levels from becoming too high.

You can find date bite options at a local grocery store such as Target. The pitted dates by Good & Gather for example, are a convenient way to enjoy this yummy sweet snack.

Hummus

Hummus is by far one of my most favorite dips, and a great option for protein if you are vegetarian/plant based only. I love the unique taste along with the different flavors it has to offer including roasted pepper, chipotle, and roasted garlic. Enjoy your hummus with some pita chips you can find at your local grocery store. You can also find hummus dipper packs with other snacks included such as pretzels at a local grocery store such as Walmart.

For when you want to be more creative

If you have time and/or feeling up to it, there are many options you can make yourself that you can bring with you on your next road trip.

Ham and cream cheese wheels

Ham and cream wheels are a filling treat that is easy to take with you on the go. Ham is another great source of protein, and even though the cream cheese part might not be the healthiest option you can choose, cheese offers many healthy fats.

This snack is also very simple to make and only requires a few steps:

  • Grab some deli meat ham from the store and spreadable cream cheese.
  • Open each slice of ham up and place around a spoonful of cream cheese in the middle.
  • Roll the ham up over the cream cheese, and pack each of the wheels into tubes.
  • Place the wheels in a to-go container and enjoy while traveling. They are clean to eat, and very filling to hold you over for periods at a time.

Greek yogurt mixture

Buy some greek yogurt from the store and add in whatever toppings you may like. You can incorporate honey, fruit, and granola! Greek yogurt has more protein and less sugar than many other flavored yogurts that are out there. Greek yogurt is also filled with probiotics that help support digestion, heart health, and even weight loss. A topping you can incorporate into the mixture such as granola is very rich in protein, fiber, and many micronutrients

No bake coconut lime energy bites

If you haven’t heard already, Starbucks recently came out with a lime-frosted coconut bar. While very delicious, you can make a similar recipe on your own. Especially when you are craving a sweet snack during your road trip. This recipe is also completely vegan, gluten and oil free, and doesn’t use any kind of added sugar. To make this recipe, all you need are dates, coconut, cashews, and lime.

For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 cup of raw cashews
  • 1 cup of soft dates (preferably pitted)
  • ⅔ cup of unsweetened coconut
  • 2 tablespoons of lime juice
  • 1 teaspoon of fresh grated lime zest

Start by using a fine grater on the lime to accumulate all of your zest. Place the cashews in a food processor until they are broken down into a coarse flour. Next add the dates to the processor to form dough, and finally add in the coconut and lime zest. Finally, you can use your hands to roll the entire mixture together into balls. This is a simple treat you can easily pack with you that utilizes all natural ingredients.

Happy snacking!

There are many healthy snack options for you to take along on your next road trip. Whether you buy them from the store, or decide to make them on your own. Remember to look for snacks high in protein, and low in added sugars, fats, artificial sweeteners, etc. Enjoy!
